3-5yrs Room - Term 4 Newsletter


Dear Parents/Carers


We hope you all had a lovely Easter and didn’t eat too many chocolate eggs !


We would like to welcome all of the new children who have recently joined us from the 2-3 room, and also the other children who have just started with Summers Nursery. We look forward to getting to know you all.


What did we enjoy learning about this term?


We have been particularly lucky with the weather so far this year but we did manage to get some play in the snow and ice in the garden. The children enjoyed seeing the changes taking place from the ice to water.

SCN 0-05a by investigating how water can change from one form to another, I can relate my findings to everyday experiences.


Burns Day

The children learned all about Robert Burns and how we still celebrate him in Scotland. The children enjoyed making funny haggis creatures and listening to lots of Scottish music, including dancing and singing to Auld Lang Syne. Mary cooked us some yummy haggis, neeps and tatties for lunch, but sadly they were not overly popular with the children, but they all had a try.

HWB 0-35a I explore and discover where foods come from as I choose, prepare and taste different foods.

EXA 0-10a I have the opportunities to enjoy taking part in dance experiences.


Chinese New Year

We celebrated Chinese New Year (the year of the Monkey !!) in February when the children enjoyed learning about Chinese culture and how it is celebrated around the world. The children created some Chinese writing and we looked at what animal represents each of the children’s year of birth. We also had some Chinese food tasting.

RME 0-04a As I explore stories, images, music and poems, I am becoming familiar with the beliefs of the world religions I am learning about.


St Patrick’s Day

We had a look at some of the ways St Patricks Day is celebrated across the world and watched some videos of the celebrations. We also used sponges to paint four leaf clovers and spoke about how these are considered to be lucky if you find one. The children really enjoyed trying some Irish dancing to some Irish music. RME 0-06a I am becoming aware of the importance of celebrations, festivals and customs in religious people’s lives.


Superhero castle

The children decided to create a superhero castle in our house corner and also took the opportunity to create their own superheroes to display in the new castle. They used their imaginations to create the characters and acted them out using capes that they made themselves. The children created a villain called Scary Joe who sent letters and pinched their dressing up outfits. They also worked together to create ideas on how they could get the costumes back, and so they decided we should make a map to find where scary Joe lives so “we can find our outfits again”. The children all enjoyed creating the maps.

LIT 0-09b I enjoy exploring events and characters in stories and other texts and I use what I learn to invent my own, sharing my ideas with others in imaginative ways.


Real life Heroes

The children have also been learning all about real life heroes. They have been particularly interested in learning about the Fire and Police services, using the dressing up outfits to act out as real life heroes. We immensely enjoyed a visit from a real policeman who had his uniform and hat on (Amy’s Dad) - he told us all about his job and how he helps people and arrests all the baddies. We also enjoyed a visit from Chloe’s Dad who is a Fireman, who visited us on two days, bringing the rest of his team and their fire engine on the second day.  We were shown some of the equipment they use to help save people, and the children especially enjoyed having a turn to use the hose to hit a target. 

EXA 0-13a inspired by a range of stimuli, I can express and communicate my ideas, thoughts and feelings through drama.

SOC 0-16a by exploring my local community, I have discovered the different roles people play and how they can help.

HWB 0-20a I can describe some of the kinds of work that people do and I am finding out about the wider world of work.


Spring Time

We have been learning all about spring time as the season has now changed. The children gathered together to tell us what they collectively already knew about spring and we then went on to create pictures and mind maps to present this information. For some of the children, this was new information to learn and they have all been very interested and giving lots of examples of how we can promote springtime. One of their ideas was that we plant seeds to grow, not only in the garden but also inside, thus learning and understanding what the plants need to grow and how to look after them.

MTH 0-10a I am aware of how routines and events in my world link with times and seasons, and have explored ways to record and display these using clocks, calendars and other methods.




Coming up in the preschool room

Superheroes and real life heroes are still proving so popular as topics that we will be continuing to learn more about them. At the same time we will look at how we can help in our community and discuss other jobs people do. The children have all been asking each other what their Mummies and Daddies do for jobs, so we will look at our parents’ jobs in more detail.


We will continue to follow the children’s ideas and interests in what we choose as topics to learn about, so if there is anything the children have been doing at home that you feel might be of interest, please feel free to inform us so we can incorporate this into our planning. We also have our parents mind map for you to use with any ideas you may have for our room.


Miss K

Miss K has now returned from maternity leave. The children have been enjoying some Easter dance and drama with Miss K and Melody the bear. They all look forward to her coming into nursery and always join in with enthusiasm in the activities Miss K leads.


Reminders

Our new show and tell dates are now on our website and we would encourage parents to remind children to bring in their show and tell on these dates. We also ask that children don’t bring in toys from home when it is not show and tell.


Please also remember to empty your child’s art pocket. The children do the art work for you and work very hard so please take time to empty them and appreciate the pictures.
