September 2015 - Term 1

Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome to all of the new children and parents who have recently joined us in the 2-3 room. We hope you have a happy and positive experience while your child is with us.

The children have enjoyed and participated in a range of different experiences to stimulate their learning and interests. During August, the children looked at ‘Flags’ and ‘Family’.

The children were given the opportunity to create their own flags, painting them with various art utensils, and some even used their hands! (Responsive Care 4; To explore, experiment and try out new things indoors and out.) They made a fantastic effort, bringing in their favourite flags from home. Some children took in homemade flags, and others took in flags from all around the world, where they have friends or family that live there - we even had toy Peppa Pig flags! The older children really enjoyed talking about their flags, with the younger ones taking part, waving their flags around, showing them off to their peers. (Responsive Care 5; To develop an awareness about what they know and can do through play.)

During our ‘Family’ topic, the children had lots of group discussions about their families, telling us who was in them, as well as discussing who lived with them at home, and any pets they have. The children also took in family photos for ‘show and tell’ which was a great success because they all got very excited about telling their peers about their mummies and daddies. (Responsive Care 7; To feel connected to their home environment and the wider community.)

The children created wonderful paintings of family portraits. They were able to express their knowledge of colours, shapes and facial features, developing their knowledge through play. (Responsive Care 5; To develop an awareness about what they know and can do through play.)

All the boys and girls enjoyed creating beach displays and a summer washing line, practising and developing new skills as they participated in painting, drawing and collage activities. (Responsive Care 3; To become independent and practice new skills.) The children also enjoyed painting with ice-cubes, exploring the ice and getting messy. This was great because it stimulated conversation about their senses. (Responsive Care 4; To explore and experiment and try out new things indoors and out.)

We all enjoyed a puppet show visit, with the children really engaging with the role play experience, as many of them knew several of the stories being acted out, which included ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’.

September and October

During September, we will continue to look at autumn, as well as engage in our topic, ‘Books and Stories’ with the children.

On the 15th of September, the children in nursery that day went to Alford Transport museum. This was really educational for them, and they were treated to a wide range of transport, some going back to the early part of the 20th century. (Responsive Care 7; To feel connected to their home environment and wider community.)They all enjoyed playing in the park before departing back to nursery on the bus.

In October, the children will be able to participate in activities based around Diwali. (Respect 6; To value diversity in language, ethnic background, faith and family circumstances.)

We will be doing Halloween activities, which will be lots of fun, and on Friday we will having our Halloween party for the children, where they will be able to come in, in fancy dress. We will also be doing spontaneous activities based on the children’s interests or wishes over the next couple of months.

If your child is toilet training, could you please ensure that you provide enough spare clothing in your child’s nursery bag.

It is also coming into the Autumn/Winter months, so as the weather is cooling down, could you please provide appropriate clothing for going outside, such as a warm jacket, hat, gloves and appropriate footwear.

Indoor footwear

Indoor footwear must be provided in the 2-3 room to ensure the cleanliness of the floor in the room, and also for the children’s safety in the instance of a fire drill, which we do regularly. We need to evacuate the children as quickly as possible and if they don’t have footwear on, this could become hazardous’.

Parents Ideas mind Map

We have a parents ideas mind map displayed in the hall next to the children’s art pockets. There is a fresh mind map put up at the beginning of every month to inform you of the forth coming topics - you are invited to write down your ideas and we can implement these into the weekly planning. We would really appreciate it if you could share your ideas with us. Thank you!

Art Pockets

Each child has an art pocket in the hall way, so could you all please ensure you check them and take away any art that is in the pocket. This will make space for any more art work your child creates. Please do not be disappointed if there is limited art in your child’s folder as we do like to display their wonderful creations before we send them home.

Learning Wall

The learning wall is displayed within the room. This is updated as the topics change. The purpose of the learning wall is to enable you to see what the children are learning and what they are getting out of the activities that they do at nursery. You are also welcome to pop your ideas up onto the learning wall.

Kind regards - Kirsty-Anne and the 2-3 room team
