NEWSLETTER 2018 Term 3

Dear Parents/Carers,

We all thought the winter weather was behind us, but the snow has eventually managed to find its way to us! Christmas is well and truly behind us now, and we hope you managed to enjoy some well-deserved time off. We have all came back re charged and ready to see what 2018 has in store for Wee Rascals!

Staff News

Little Bunnies

Our newest member of the Little Bunnies room is Shannon Innes. Shannon has been doing childcare at the North East of Scotland College (NESCOL), however has decided that working hands-on in a nursery environment is more for her. Shannon works full time, Monday-Thursday in a Maternity cover position.

Staff Training

Chloe Muirhead (Cheeky Monkeys) has now handed in her level 3 folder to be certified and hopes to receive her certificate in the next few weeks!!

Tyler Webster has now completed her Level 3 and received her certificate at the end of November 2017!

Well done to the girls for their hard work!

Louise Brown continues to work through her level 3 whilst on maternity leave.

Improvement Plans

Our new Improvement plans are now active! There has been a re-model of the Improvement plans by the local authority. These are now long term plans to be followed throughout the academic year.

We have 3 plans in place at the moment; the use of the children's Interactive Learning Diaries (ILD's) which covers 2.2 Curriculum, 2.3 Learning, Teaching and Assessment, and 3.2 Securing Children's Progress, as well as staff gaining more knowledge on the 'How Good is Our Early Learning and Childcare' document which covers; 1.1 Self-evaluation for self-improvement, and the development of loose parts which covers 3.3; Develop creativity and skills for life and learning. To find out more on how we plan to develop in each area, please see our Improvement plan board in the hallway.

Busy Bee Topic

My body

The children have been learning about the importance of hand hygiene, following a good hand washing routine and knowing when we should wash our hands.

We have been learning about the different parts of the body and using 'post it' notes, marking what each part of the body is called. The children have also been doing some self-portraits, using a mirror to identify our features and discussing how we look different from our peers.

Tooth brushing has been a big focus during this topic also. We spoke about which foods are healthy and unhealthy, and why they can be bad for our teeth. We practiced brushing a laminated set of teeth which had 'marks' on the teeth, and the children understood that we must brush for a set time before the 'bad stuff' will come off the teeth. We also spoke a bit about flossing!

Other areas the children have been learning about are the heart, their skin, and getting older. You will see all activities on our learning wall if you want to see more about what the children have been learning. We are still learning so much about 'The body'!

Angela our dance teacher is coming to see the children on a Friday at 1.15pm during term 3.

Cheeky Monkeys Topics

The children showed lots of interest during this topic. We spoke about the different types of weather and things we would need to wear, such as wellies and waterproof suits for a rainy day! We learnt about colours, matching colours together using winter clothes as a theme.

The children have been practicing their threading skills using laces, showing really good fine motor skills and hand eye coordination.

We had a visit to see Santa last term! Santa came to meet us at B.A stores and also took his Reindeers for us to see! We all went on the little train which took us to the Reindeers. Great fun was had by all!

The children participated in many great activities, which involved lots of mess creating some wonderful pictures, especially when using the glitter! We spoke a lot about Santa and what he looks like, creating our very own Santa's, along with a Santa letter.

We had a great party, where Angela the dance teacher came along to help us express ourselves through dance.

At Home

We spoke about the different shapes houses have, which led us onto doing some shape recognition activities. We tried to create an image of what our own houses look like, using different shapes.

We made a family tree board. The children were asked to take in some photos of the people they live with, and then we discussed who each person was. They are still enjoying seeing their own families on the wall at nursery.

The children started showing an interest in the dinosaurs during free play, so this topic naturally came to light. We discussed dinosaurs and how old they were, as well as speaking a bit about how they are no longer around. We also had a volcano experiment, using baking soda and vinegar for the eruption, and playdough to create a volcano.

The children baked, measuring out amounts and pouring from the jug to a bowl. The boys and girls were great at turn taking and sharing during this activity. Our Dinosaur biscuits went home for the children to enjoy!

Little Bunnies Topics

Through the topic 'Space', the Little Bunnies developed their gross motor skills by doing a jumping activity, working towards their next steps. We made our own space rocks out of tin foil and encouraged the children to use tongs to pick them up, working on their fine motor skills and problem solving. We did puzzles, with some children managing 6+ pieces.

We practiced number recognition, counting stars, and for art and craft, we made kitchen roll rockets, paper plate spaceships, hand/feet print aliens, cotton wool moons and chalk star pictures. In the messy tray, we had moon sand, shaving foam, crazy soap and building blocks, black glittery playdough, green slime with googly eyes, as well as water and glitter.

For this topic, we made up a sensory wall, where there were poly pockets full of hair gel, shaving foam, lentils, tin foil and pom poms.

We then moved onto Christmas, and for this the children made a card to go home to their mummies and daddies, as well as a 2018 Calendar which had its own stamp on each.

We focused on supporting the children with the actions at song time, and the older children started copying the singing words.

For art and craft, the babies made bow pasta wreaths, feet and finger print Christmas trees, lolly pop stick tree decorations, cotton wool snow men, as well as potato print baubles, and for messy play, we played in fake snow, real snow, ice, cotton wool and shaving foam, as well as water beads.

We had our Christmas lunch and our end of term party where all the children got to meet Santa!!

We started this year off with 'At the farm' where we had a discussion about where milk comes from! We discussed the different animals and their babies, even doing a match up activity with the small world animals we have. We worked on our problem solving skills with the puzzles and building blocks. The children made farm animal noises and helped build their own 'Farm' with the duplo. We washed the animals in soapy water, after they had been playing in the mud and bark. The children really enjoyed painting with the tractors, running them through the paint and onto the paper provided. They made cotton wool sheep and animal masks using paper plates, and in the messy tray there was sawdust, sand, water and mud, all with the animals in it.

Our current topic is 'Transport'. You will find out what we have been doing if you check out our learning wall next to the signing in and out sheet.
